album of the day: Stevie Ray Vaughan – The Sky Is Crying

22Aug08

Song Recommendations: Little Wing, May I Have A Talk With You, The Sky Is Crying, Life By The Drop, So Excited

One of the greatest guitarists, not only of blues, but of all music, of all time. He was tragically killed in a helicopeter crash after a concert in 1990. The helicopter was originally supposed to have his brother Jimmie and Jimmie’s wife, but there turned out only to be one seat. Tragic and sad, but the music lives on. The Sky Is Crying is a standard amongst blues albums. His music is an influence to many. One current popular artist that you can hear Stevie’s influence is in John Mayer.  Other artists that you can hear some SRV are Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Jonny Lang, Los Lonely Boys as well as Robert Randolph. He could definitely play effortlessly on his Fender Stratocasters as well calm down on some great acoustic songs. He could make his guitar sing like a champ. He will go down as one of the all time best. Check out this classic album!

Enjoy!

an outstanding choice– who’d have thought you could improve on hendrix? but i would argue that this recording of ‘little wing’ is superior to jimi’s. i remember wearing this one out…
